If you are in the market for a NAS and are reading this for research, buy a Qnap or Synology and put your own disks in. You get far better NAS features on the onboard ROM, better performance and you can choose better quality disks. If you are stuck with a defective BA 110 like the rest of us (they are all defective from the factory in my opinion), read on….Its more than possible to replace the disk, in fact I did it this weekend. Although it is a slow and long winded process if you are using a previously formatted disk. Its a 10 min job with a brand new unused disk. Before starting the process I upgraded the NAS bios to the latest version 1000.1321. I then chose a 2tb WD Green that was laying around to replace the factory disk. My WD had been used and was formatted with NTFS.

I downloaded a utility “Data Lifeguard Diagnostics” for windows from the WD website and pluged my failed Seagate disk in to a sata port on my Windows PC.  This utility reported that SMART was tripped by the number of bad sectors being over the threshold limit set on the disk, so I threw it in the bin (after performing a FULL ERASE — ie overwrite each block with zero’s)

I then put my NTFS formatted WD Green into the BA 110 but it failed to boot. To overcome this, I connected this disk to the PC and did the FULL ERASE on it using the same utility before putting it in the BA 110. This time it booted fine and went into full factory reset after approx 5-10 mins of booting. It created a new data volume and the default shares.

I am now 24 hrs into copying data back to the NAS. Thus far there have been NO random errors or failed copies. Previously it would crash and reset the NAS every couple of hrs of access, and the write speed appears to be 10% better than before.

As you can see from the screen shot attachment, the NAS now identifies the disk as WD.

Sadly I cannot confirm if disks larger than 2tb work as it would be great to test with a 3tb Red, or a 4tb Hitachi sometime.
